Barbara I Gongini graduated in 1996 from Danmarks Designskole, Institute of Unica Design. Of Nordic descent, BIG Is now based in Denmark. The aim of the label is to create clothing with distinctly Nordic influences, based on a conceptual approach to the process; where experiments with the forms provide the setting for the visual motives in the design. BIG furthermore participates very actively on the artistic debate in the Nordic countries. During the work, interdisciplinary cooperation with other artists within music, photography. film, etc, is emphasized and this nourishes inspiration during the design process itself. BIG’s collections comprise of two lines of womenswear; Barbara I Gongini and THE BLACK LINE. The collection represents these two extreme points, but they must be seen as a coherent whole. 
BARBARA I GONGINI is the creative part of the two lines where play and experiments are tested based on varying themes and it is here that art and design meet. The results of the above process form the basic elements in the other part of the collection and present the subtle profile of the brand. THE BLACK LINE is a simplification of the above and is the more commercial line of the collection and the purpose is to create a more basic line of womenswear with a very personal and original expression of form. The collections are released twice a year.
High quality and artistic responsibility comprises all parts of the process. This contributes to local and global responsibility towards customers for products. It is not the aim of the label to market its products through many commercial channels, but the company would rather like to be represented in the most exclusive concept-boutiques around the world. 
The company claims not to aim at quick growth or high volume, but operates in a way which ensures a high level of innovation and quality can be sustained. The overriding objective of the company is to be among the leading pioneering vanguard of international womenswear.
